Last month, we reported that litigation has been instituted to have the City of Johannesburg’s CCTV-bylaw declared invalid, and set aside. The City, as expected, is opposing the application, and we are awaiting their papers, which are already overdue.

A number of parties have interested that they may wish to join the proceedings as friends of the court, in order to make representations on behalf of their constituents. As at date hereof, no such joinder applications have been received.

The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) has subsequently launched a separate court application, seeking similar relief. Our legal teams have been in contact with each other. If practical, the court will be requested to hear the matters simultaneously, due to the fact that the issues are interrelated. Each matter will still, however, be adjudicated on its own merits.
